What are heat pumps?

Heat pumps are electrically driven units that collect heat from a low-temperature space, called a source, and deliver it to a higher temperature space called a sink.

How does a heat pump work?

A heat pump extracts heat from the air or the ground and turns it into energy for heating your home, and in some cases, for providing hot water.

The heat moves naturally from places with higher temperatures to spaces with lower temperatures. The heat pump uses electrical energy to counter this natural movement and to pump the energy found in a colder place to a warmer one.

Heat pumps based on the source they use

The most commonly used sources are air-source and ground-source.

Air-source heat pumps extract heat from the air outside and use electricity to warm the liquid refrigerant they contain. This warmed refrigerant becomes the source for the heating system.

Ground-source heat pumps use earth, underground water or both to generate heat in the winter and to remove heat from your home in the summer.

What are the advantages of using heat pumps?

  • Efficiency: Compared to traditional heating systems such as electrical or boiler, heat pump systems provide higher efficiency.
  • These pumps generate less CO2 than gas heating systems, reducing the footprint of your home or office.
  • Energy Savings: The higher efficiency of the heat pumps can translate into significant energy savings and lower energy or gas bills.
  • Moreover, ground-source heat pumps can decrease energy consumption by 62% compared to standard air conditioning.
  • Easy to install: Heat pumps, especially air-source ones, can be integrated into your home to function with your existing heating units. This ensures an easy; no messy renovation needed installation that keeps your state of comfort and your costs under control.
  • Suited for both winter and summer: Heat pumps collect heat from the air or ground and use it to warm your home.

They can also draw heat from your home and use it to cool it during summer.

Which heat pump is right for you?

Heat pumps can be installed to meet different building layouts and heating requirements.

  • Ducted heat pump systems: Ducted heat pump systems distribute cold or warm air generated by their central unit in several rooms through ducts installed in the ceiling.
  • Split system: The split system consists of an indoor and an outdoor unit connected through copper pipes. The indoor unit distributes the air via the ventilation system.
  • Multi-room heat pump: The multi-room heat pump can heat or cool two or more rooms with just one outdoor unit, while the indoor units controlled individually.
  • Under-floor heating: Under-floor heating works well with an air-source heat pump, and this system can run smoothly at low temperatures.
  • Heat pumps for radiators: Heat pumps can also power radiators, provided they have capacities matching heat pumps.
